Forest bathing invites you to step into the woods without an agenda, or perhaps with just one quiet intention: to notice. You walk slowly. You pause often. You look around and appreciate the light shifting between branches, the scent of damp earth, the subtle hum of life all around you.

It might sound simple. And it is. But it is also deeply rewarding and refreshing. There is something powerful about noticing the life of nature around you and recognising yourself as part of it.


What the gift experience is

This is a guided forest bathing experience with Woodlands Breathing, based near Edinburgh in West Lothian.

Forest bathing, originally known as Shinrin-yoku in Japan, is a gentle wellbeing practice that focuses on slowing down and awakening your senses in nature. Unlike hiking or exercise, there is no distance to cover and no goal to achieve.

During an in-person session, you’ll be guided through simple sensory invitations. You may be invited to notice textures, sounds, scents, colours, or simply sit in stillness. The pace is intentionally unhurried. You walk slowly, rest often, and share reflections in a calm, supportive space.


Online sessions are also available, bringing the same guided experience to your own local greenspace, garden, or even balcony.

The experience is led by a certified Forest Therapy Guide trained through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, meaning the structure follows internationally recognised nature-connection principles rather than being a casual walk in the woods.

Our Take & How to Enhance the Experience

We’ll be honest with you, we’re biased. We’ve grown up surrounded by forests and love them. Forests are amazing. I used to do this in Estonia casually all the time and couldn’t recommend it enough. There is no better place to clear your head, mind, body and soul.


There is something different about tuning in to yourself in a forest versus sitting indoors in meditation. You are surrounded by living things. Beauty. Movement. The elements. There is an aliveness that feels grounding rather than distracting.

Generally, the key is to go into the woods without expectations, but with a gentle tone of curiosity. You are going there to notice. To allow peace, gratitude, joy, or whatever feels important to surface naturally.


As usual, leave yourself enough time to get there. In-person is always our recommendation. Leave your phone in your bag on mute. Protect that time block in your day with no further commitments afterwards. If gifting this, suggest protecting the rest of the day from unnecessary nonsense.

The magic of forest bathing is subtle. It builds gradually. You may not notice the shift immediately, but by the end you’ll likely feel steadier, lighter, and more present. Pair it with a quiet coffee or tea afterwards, a slow drive home without music, or even an early night. Let the calm linger.
